Count

She has ten fingers

But no more

She smiles at the sky

And wonders what’s in store

She counts her blessings

On ten fingers

On thoughts and prayers

Her heart always lingers

I loved her in my simple way

I tried to love her right

I kissed her in the cool dawn dew

Caressed her with touch and sight

I counted her heart beats day by day

As her pulse would begin to race

I counted every smile and line

That ever crossed her face

When she chose to leave my side

The sadness was too much

My heart began to slow and cry

I missed her lightest touch

You have ten fingers

But no more

Count on those fingers

Who loves you more?

Think a while and say to me

On those fingers count away

Which man’s heart ceases to beat

When his true love you will not meet?
