Moonlight

And there in the darkness… as if within in a dream

Lies my love and fortress… there lies my queen

As the moonlight touches her soft fair skin

It reflects in waves all that lies within

Peaceful she lies in her most gentle slumber

Vulnerable, for by cloth, she lies unencumbered

And should the moonlight dare run away

There’d be no witness to stand in the way.

And thus, so slowly forth, I quietly creep

No thief of innocence shall spoil her sleep

But surely, in longing, I can’t hold my peace

I come quietly closer, seeking release

Softly, now, I pause to reflect and pray

And ask dear God why I should walk away

For surely with consent this passion is holy

And with his blessing she can console me

For if the moon should stand as a witness

And of our faith its pure light be the litmus

Under its gaze, to God we could confess

A love so holy, He would surely bless

All at once she is looking up at me

Will she falter, will she flee?

Is this moment a crime or a rapture

What emotion shall it capture?

And yet of fear or surprise, not a trace

Joy as if greeting an old familiar face

As if we were always meant to be together

As if announcing the beginning of forever

there in our moonlight we come towards each other

Fair it’s to say, like the most tender of lovers

How could the stars be quite so jealous?

Of two mere mortals in love and lust?
