The Devil Does…

Dearest Amarill,

And so I continue in my trials, travails, and seemly quixotic pursuits. Yet the further this goes, the more and more my strength ebbs. The Devil seems to have my number. I’ve been trying to hide from him ever since we had that last walk together when he showed him his collection of fools. Unfortunately he seems to remember our discussion of you. He increased the number of auditory hallucinations. I hear your voice everywhere. Now he’s increased the visual hallucinations.

The other day I heard you calling from the faded distance. I saw you standing on top of a very tall hill in some distress. So I ran to reach you. The hill was tall and full of thorns, loose footing, and sharp rocks. I climbed and climbed higher still. By the time I was halfway up I was bruised and bloody.

Yet when I reached the summit you were gone. All around me there was laughter and echoes of your cries. All I found was your footprints. You had vanished in the air.

Romeo
